INNIO’s Waukesha Gas Engines Provide High Overall Efficiency and Low Emissions to District Heating Plant in Germany

INNIO Announces

Waukesha, WISC.— April 24, 2019 —

As Germany aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2020, INNIO* is a key enabler and integral part of the energy transformation with its gas engine technology. As an example of this, INNIO announced the successful commissioning of a modernized district heating plant with Waukesha* VHP* 9394GSI rich-burn gas engines with grid code certification supplied by its authorized Channel Partner for Waukesha gas engines, S&L Energie-Projekte GmbH (S&L). The plant meets high overall efficiency (electrical and thermal) and low emissions. For the project, S&L provided four packages of INNIO’s Waukesha gas engines to Stadtwerke Lutherstadt Wittenberg GmbH in Germany.

“In comparison with the previous combined heat and power (CHP) plant, the overall efficiency of the new CHP plant is significantly higher. Our testing shows that the modernized district heating plant achieves a significant overall efficiency that is well above the guaranteed zero tolerance value of 95%, and the emission values are well below the legal national requirements,” said Hans-Joachim Herrmann, executive director, Stadtwerke Lutherstadt Wittenberg GmbH. “S&L completed the project on time and also provided a solution of INNIO’s Waukesha gas engines that not only met, but exceeded our performance and emissions requirements.”

INNIO’s technology provided the Wittenberg district heating plant with NOx emissions to meet Stadtwerke Lutherstadt Wittenberg’s challenging emission requirements. Emissions of the new plant are about 80% below future national requirements. INNIO’s rich-burn engines can meet these requirements by using a three-way catalyst. S&L supplied the generator for the genset package, performed the grid code certification and provided the balance of plant for the engines.

“With two renowned brands in the portfolio—Waukesha and Jenbacher* gas engines—INNIO can offer solutions that meet the customers’ requirements, independent of whether they are looking for higher electrical efficiency and to operate at higher loads or if they need higher heat output while achieving lower emissions levels and a higher flexibility regarding transient loads and ambient conditions,” said Norbert Hetebrüg, Executive Director Sales Europe at INNIO. “As a solution provider, INNIO can help customers choose the right technology depending on emission requirements, electrical and thermal efficiency and economical evaluation criteria.”

Situated 60 kilometers (37 miles) north of Leipzig and 90 kilometers (56 miles) southwest of Berlin, Stadtwerke Lutherstadt Wittenberg was founded in 1991 with a small CHP plant and just a few district heating customers. Today, Stadtwerke Lutherstadt Wittenberg is a modern combination utility supplying clean power 365 days a year to around 41,000 households and environmentally friendly heat to 21,000 homes.

“Through the modernized district heating plant, we are doing our part to help meet Germany’s goals of decarbonizing the energy system in Germany and meeting a minimum of 80% CO2 reduction by 2050,” highlights Hans-Joachim Herrmann.
