One step closer to 1st hydrogen power plant in the Asia Pacific region

With the successful acceptance testing of INNIO’s Jenbacher “Ready for Hydrogen“ engine technology, it’s official: The first 100% hydrogen-fueled power plant will be built in the Asia Pacific region! INNIO and Hyosung Heavy Industries (Hyosung) performed the successful acceptance testing during a visit to the INNIO campus in Jenbach, Austria. The engines were fueled with both hydrogen and traditional pipeline gas.

The pilot hydrogen power plant will be built at the Hyosung Chemical Yongyeon Plant in Ulsan, South Korea. It will be the first 100% H2 power plant in the 1 MW scale in South Korea and an important milestone for the country’s decarbonization strategy. Hydrogen, produced as a byproduct at the Hyosung chemical plant, currently is sold off to an industrial gas company.

INNIO’s authorized distributor for Jenbacher engines, RNP Enterprise, has been instrumental in ensuring a strong relationship with Hyosung through two previously successful projects in the Commercial & Industrial sector. RNP will provide 2,000 operating hours of service to help ensure the demonstration of the 100% hydrogen power plant. The project demonstration is expected to be completed in 2023.
