SAO PAULO, Brazil – December 14, 2022 –INNIO Group (INNIO*) announced today that it will supply six Jenbacher J612 engines for a trigeneration plant, producing electricity, warm water and cooling for the Instituto Butantan. The project was developed with Union Rhac, which will lead the development of the new combined cooling, heat and power (CCHP) plant, cooperating with Butantan and INNIO. The plant will generate about 12 megawatts (MW) of electrical power and about 6 MW of thermal power.

Instituto Butantan is working to prevent diseases like COVID-19, influenza, tetanus, hepatitis, and more. INNIO’s energy solutions contribute to enhancing the security of electricity supply, with thermal energy being used for district heating. The flagship project will reduce CO2 emissions by up to 30% compared to the diesel solution.

“INNIO’s Jenbacher engines will make Instituto Butantan independent from the grid and enable the scientific center to self-produce its power, heat and cooling,” said Dr. Olaf Berlien, president and CEO of INNIO Group. “Our trigeneration solutions accelerate a sustainable, resilient, and affordable energy supply that fits excellently with Butantan’s energy strategy and empowers the production of life-saving pharmaceuticals.”

“Geographically, Instituto Butantan is located in an extremely remote location, often referred to as the ‘end of the line’, where frequent power interruptions occur. However, as a pharmaceutical company, Butantan requires a secure energy supply to be able to operate when there is grid intermittency. With INNIO’s excellent reputation as a proven energy solution and service provider across Brazil, Butantan selected INNIO’s flexible, scalable and resilient Jenbacher engine technology," says Dimas Covas, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Butantan Foundation.

With 121 years of history, Butantan works to prevent diseases like Covid-19, flu, tetanus, diphtheria, hepatitis A and B, chikungunya, whooping cough, dengue, HPV, and rabies. In 2021, Butantan produced 100 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine, 80 million doses of the flu vaccine, 28 million doses of vaccines against hepatitis A and B, HPV, DTaP and rabies, and 560 thousand units of serums against venoms, bacterial toxins, and the rabies virus. Instituto Butantan is the main producer of immunobiologicals in Brazil.

INNIO’s energy solutions will enable Instituto Butantan to generate and manage energy sustainably while navigating the fast-changing landscape of traditional and green energy sources.
